SHREVEPORT, La. — A local culinary artist recently brought Northwest Louisiana's flavors to a massive audience during a premier national celebration. Chef Niema DiGrazia represented the Shreveport-Bossier region at the ESSENCE Festival of Culture Wine & Food Festival in New Orleans, standing alongside top culinary creators to celebrate the food traditions of Louisiana and the African Diaspora.
DiGrazia brought her unique Afro-Fusion cooking style to a major event called The ESSENCE Cookoff: Reimagining Shrimp & Grits. The competition, organized by award-winning chef Nina Compton, gave DiGrazia a chance to reinvent a classic Southern staple by blending her West African roots, Caribbean flavors, and Southern heritage. Her dish put a spotlight on these deep cultural ties and featured the specific peanut stew recipe that previously earned her a victory over Bobby Flay on the Food Network.
In addition to cooking, DiGrazia participated as a speaker on a panel titled "Taste of the Diaspora." Alongside other food and beverage experts, she discussed how Africa, the Caribbean, and the American South continue to shape modern food culture. She used personal stories to show how recipes connect different generations and communities while honoring Black culinary history.
Her appearance at the festival highlighted the rising culinary reputation of the Shreveport-Bossier area. By sharing her work with thousands of visitors, she helped draw national attention to the food culture of Northwest Louisiana.
