A substitute teacher in Louisiana was arrested for allegedly using the local emergency alert system to trigger active shooter alerts at five different schools at once.
Lytonja Barfield , a substitute teacher who works with the Caddo Parish School Board, was arrested and charged with five counts of menace, according to a press release from the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office. On Wednesday, August 19, Sheriff Henry Whitehorn Sr. says police were alerted by school officials of possible active shooter threats at multiple schools.
Police promptly implemented measures to ensure the safety of students while attempting to determine the legitimacy of the threats, which were flagged using the school district’s emergency management system. The sheriff’s office says they quickly figured out that the alerts were false and identified Barfield, 58, as the one responsible for sending the emergency active shooter alerts.
After being questioned by detectives, Barfield was arrested and taken into custody. She is currently being held in jail in Caddo Parish. It’s unclear when she is expected to appear in court.
“The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office takes all threats involving schools seriously,” the sheriff’s office wrote in its press release. “False reports of active threats can cause significant disruptions, prompt emergency responses, and create fear among students, parents, school employees, and the broader community.”
Police did not identify a motive for Barfield’s alleged actions, nor did they state specific security measures they implemented for the safety of the students after the threats were identified.
