A three-day manhunt ended when John Westblade, recluse farmer and murder suspect, fell before a barrage of policemen's bullets at the edge of a swamp near Grand Marais. He is believed to have slain state patrolmen Sigrud Ide and Alvin Tofte in a dispute over the location of a for-sale sign.

Herbert Gustafson, chairman of the Duluth School Board's building committee, said he was "favorably impressed" by progress at the new Ordean Junior High School structure. The $1.4 million school (equivalent of $17.8 million in 2026) will have an enrollment of about 600.

A new state law taking effect Aug. 1 will ban bald tires on Minnesota highways. Tires with exposed ply or cords, and visible bumps, bulges or separations are also banned.

The Duluth Huskies had been negotiating to book Bob Dylan for a concert at Wade Stadium as part of his third annual tour of minor league baseball stadiums. Dylan will not be performing here, however, as "he wasn't able to get enough concerts in the area to make it worthwhile," said Mayor Herb Bergson.
