Rocky Adkins announces candidacy for Kentucky governor

LEXINGTON (WKYT) - Rocky Adkins announced Tuesday he is running for governor of Kentucky, joining Lt. Governor Jacqueline Coleman in what is expected to be a competitive Democratic primary.

Adkins released a Facebook video focused on the theme of “keep fighting” and held his first public event Tuesday afternoon at The Burl brewery in Lexington as part of his formal announcement.

Adkins makes his case

“The governor of Kentucky is the last line of defense this state has got — don’t ever forget that, the last line of defense,” Adkins said.

Supporters said Adkins has statewide name recognition and an understanding of both policy and politics. Adkins said he would fight for working Kentuckians.

“Because of that young man in Pikeville, in Pike County, who returns home with steel toe boots, and a dinner bucket — works just as hard as his daddy did,” Adkins said.

Democratic primary takes shape

Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman, who made her announcement to run April 20th, has strong ties across Kentucky and the backing of teachers.

Adkins has a traditional following in eastern Kentucky. WKYT Political Editor Bill Bryant said the two candidates share many of the same supporters but differ in how they present themselves.

“Adkins and Coleman may have to work to keep it from feeling a little bit awkward, but I think they will enjoy the race in the long run,” Bryant said.

GOP field still unclear

No Republican candidates have formally entered the race. Speculation includes 1rst District Congressman James Comer, who lost a close primary 11 years ago to eventual Governor Matt Bevin.
