Some people leave a mark on a community for a few years. Others help shape generations.
For nearly five decades, Terry Curtis has been one of those people.
As the Preschool Director of Little Folks Preschool and Daycare in Merino since 1992, Terry has been opening the doors of Little Folks Preschool to children whose families have trusted her year after year. Today, many parents remember their own time at Little Folks before bringing their children through those same doors. Along the way, she’s become a familiar face to families throughout the community, caring for generations of children who have grown up with Little Folks as part of their story.

Terry has never believed that ‘good enough’ is enough. When Colorado launched Colorado Shines— the state’s quality rating and improvement system — she chose to pursue the highest standards, even though participation beyond Level 1 is voluntary.
That commitment paid off.
In 2024, Little Folks Preschool and Daycare earned a Colorado Shines Level 5 rating, the highest quality designation a program can receive. Achieving Level 5 represents years of professional development, continuous improvement, and a shared commitment from Terry and her staff to provide exceptional care and learning experiences for children.
But those who know Terry say awards have never been the goal.
Instead, she’s focused on creating a preschool where children feel safe to explore, teachers feel supported to grow, and families know they’re part of the journey.
That culture is reflected in the people who work alongside her. Some staff members have spent decades at Little Folks, including one educator who has been part of the program for 32 years. Their longevity speaks to the environment Terry has built, one rooted in trust, collaboration, and a shared commitment to children.

In a small community like Merino, a preschool is more than a place for children to learn. It’s where families build connections, where first friendships begin, and where children take some of their very first steps toward lifelong learning. “Play everyday!” is the motto she brings to all of her work, as a reminder to everyone of the importance of play in healthy development.
For decades, Terry Curtis has helped make those moments possible. Her leadership has strengthened not only one preschool, but an entire community, leaving a legacy that will continue for generations of Colorado children and families.
