What measures Nevada has in place to keep elections secure. What measures Nevada has in place to keep elections secure LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — When it comes to election security, Nevada leaders say they take the issue very seriously. In 2024, the MIT Election Data and Science Lab ranked Nevada second in the country for election performance.Over the years, there have been several measures put in place to make sure the Silver State continues to have fair and safe elections, including in Tuesday's primary. In 2020, there were a few small protests outside the Clark County Election offices in North Las Vegas during the heated general election."So people were upset in 2020 because that was the pandemic, and we went to almost universal mail-in voting.Up until that time, most people had never watched the process of counting those ballots," said Dr.Sondra Cosgrove, the executive director of Vote Nevada and also a history professor at the College of Southern Nevada.Since then, people of any party can sign up to be election observers."I could just sign up as voters in Nevada, and we would then be trained on, you know, what the process is, and then could sit and watch it happen," said Cosgrove.News 3 spoke with voters outside a library in Henderson participating in Tuesday's primary election."I haven't decided if I'm going to do it on my ballot.or if I'll just do it there," said Kaitlyn Breeding.John Rich says he likes to vote on Election Day."I do it in person.I like to go into the ballot box and everything like that," he said. Each has different issues important to them."The one biggest thing is here in Henderson you know for the recreations department, they have those funds that are becoming available," said Rich."Vote yes which I'm going to do." This year, voters will see something new at polling sites.Along with voting on the machine, you will print a version that you will also turn in.Cosgrove says this is another way ballots will be secure in the Silver State."This way your paper ballot is now being preserved in a, in a container, so if there's any question about the vote, not only do you have the record from the tabulation machine, but now you have a completed ballot for every single voter in the state of Nevada, in case you need to do an audit of the vote," said Cosgrove. And she says if anyone tries to cheat the system, the state has a system in place to stop them."Every single one of us has a barcoded number associated with us as a voter, so if I turn in my mail-in ballot, there is a barcode on the envelope that gets swiped as my ballot comes in," said Cosgrove. She says if they show up in person to vote again, the system will show that the person associated with that barcode has already voted.Rich says he believes Nevada has safe and secure voting in place.I do," said Rich."I haven't had any reason to doubt election security or integrity.I think it's always been fair." Breeding agreed."I think that all the people who are doing the elections are doing it for the best outcome for the people and for the elections," she said."I don't think that there's fraud going on." The Secretary of State's office also has a ballot tracker on its website that shows you where your ballot is in the process of arriving at the voting center, all the way through the moment your ballot has been counted.
