Summer Science Program is a nonprofit organization offering science immersion experiences to accelerate learning, doing, and belonging in science. It is one of the oldest and longest-running residential STEM programs in the nation, providing high school students with scientific research experiences in astrophysics, biochemistry, genomics, and other fields at some of the top research colleges and universities in North America. This summer, SSP International is running 17 Summer Science Programs across 14 colleges and universities, including Indiana University. Participants in the Biochemist Program at Indiana University are conducting modern biochemical research to understand the structural and chemical properties of enzymes and design a molecule that can combat fungal pathogens in crops. Gloria Chi of WFHB’s Youth Radio spoke with two of the research teams. In this feature you’ll hear the perspectives of six participating high school students.

Earlier this month, the Lotus Education and Arts Foundation announced its 2026 Lotus festival lineup. For our archive segment this week, we listen back to a 2018 live session with Making Movies , a band that performed at Lotus in 2018 and is returning to the festival this year. Hosted by Christine Brackenhoff, this session comes from our ongoing Lotus Live on WFHB series, which began back when Lotus and WFHB were both brand new organizations.
Up next, on May 21st of this year, Chicago alt-country band Case Oats stopped by the WFHB Firehouse ahead of their show that night at The Bishop. Led by Casey Gomez Walker and featuring Spencer Tweedy (drums), Max Subar (guitar and pedal steel), Jason Ashworth (bass), and Scott Daniel (fiddle), the band joined us for three songs and a conversation about their acclaimed debut album, “Last Missouri Exit,” Midwest storytelling, and the collaborative spirit that has made them one of the most exciting new bands in alt-country.
