Police: Gulfport shooting suspect arrested after running from cops, hiding in trash can

GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) — Thursday, the Gulfport Police Department says one person is in custody and another is on the run after a shooting left one person injured.

Police were first called just before 9 p.m. Wednesday night to respond to reports of a shooting in the 14000 block of Cypress Court. When they arrived, they found one person who had been shot. He was taken to a local hospital to be treated and was listed in stable condition. An AR-style rifle was also found on the scene.

While securing the scene, officers encountered 21-year-old Deshawn Marques Reed. Officers tried to confront him, but Reed ran, spurring an on-foot chase. He was later found hiding inside a garbage can and was allegedly in possession of marijuana.

Reed was taken to the Gulfport Police Department to be interviewed and was later served with a felony warrant stemming from a separate drive-by shooting that happened on May 16. He was then taken to be held at the Harrison County Adult Detention Center, where he is being held on a $250,000 bond and a Mississippi Department of Corrections hold. More charges could be pending.
