As school starts, voters in Wiscasset, Maine, again narrowly reject school budget

Voters in Wiscasset again narrowly rejected the school budget proposal on Tuesday.

The vote was 250 opposed and 228 in favor of the $10.7 million spending plan. That means that 52.3% of voters were against the proposal.

In June, the proposed school budget failed by a vote of 547 to 535, meaning 50.5% opposed the plan. That proposal was a $11.2 million spending plan.

That proposal had been adopted at a special town budget meeting of the Wiscasset School Department on July 23.

The spending plan that was rejected on Tuesday was actually $7,633 less than the budget for the previous school year.

The school department will now go through the process of revising the budget proposal again.

The first day of school for students in the Wiscasset school district was on Monday, the day before the vote.

On Tuesday, voters in Wiscasset did approve a bond to move the wastewater treatment plant in town. That vote was 263 in favor and 214 opposed.
