Thunderstorms bring heavy rain to to parts of New Mexico Wednesday
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Scattered thunderstorms will continue through Wednesday evening across parts of New Mexico, with brief heavy downpours possible near Taos, Red River and Angel Fire.
The best chances through the evening include Taos, Red River, Angel Fire, Las Vegas, Raton, Clayton, Ruidoso, Cloudcroft, Silver City and the surrounding mountains.
Storms moving south from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains could produce brief heavy downpours, especially near Taos, Red River and Angel Fire. The flash flood threat remains low.
Farther west, including Gallup, Grants, Cuba and the Continental Divide, storms will be slow-moving but less likely to produce much rain. The main threats there will be dry lightning and strong, erratic wind gusts.
Most storms will diminish by around midnight.
Thursday outlook
On Thursday, drier air will move into Farmington, Gallup, Bloomfield, Cuba and much of northwest New Mexico. That will reduce storm chances there.
The better chances for afternoon thunderstorms will shift to Taos, Las Vegas, Raton, Clayton, Ruidoso, Cloudcroft and Silver City.
A few storms near Raton, Clayton and the Texas border could become strong to severe, with damaging wind gusts and hail the main threats.
