Iowa toddler in critical condition after being hit by vehicle driven by her mother
A Coon Rapids family is asking for prayers after a 15-month-old girl was hit by a car Monday night and remains in critical condition.
Police said Mia Mauricio was struck around 8 p.m. when she was in the path of an SUV driven by her mother, who did not see her. Family members began CPR before an ambulance arrived, and Mia was flown to an Omaha hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Since the accident Juan Trevino, Mia’s uncle, said the family has been overwhelmed by community support.
“Just knowing that the care and love that the community has for this little girl and my family is just amazing,” Trevino said. “Just take a small amount of time out of your day and pray for her. And just pray for a miracle."
Trevino said donations have been pouring in, and local businesses have started fundraisers, but he warned that at least one fake Venmo account has been posing as a family member and asking for money.
“Just pray for her. That’s all we expect. Just take 5 minutes out of your time and just pray,” Trevino said.
The Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids hosted a vigil at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
Police said the crash remains under investigation.
