ATV Safety Concerns Near Houlton School

HOULTON, Maine (WAGM) - Houlton Police are responding to several complaints about ATVs speeding and driving recklessly on the trail behind the Region Two School of Applied Technology.

Police Chief Timothy DeLuca says much of the ATV trail system utilizes private land, making good relationships with landowners critical. He says it is unusual for an ATV trail to run so close to a school, but the route was moved there after problems developed along its previous path. Chief DeLuca says if the issues continue, the trail may need to be rerouted again. He says the department’s top priority is keeping the youth and students in the area safe.

DeLuca says earlier today he spoke with the president of the ATV club that manages the trail. The club plans to add more signs to maintain safety in the area. Police say most riders follow the rules, but all it takes is one person being reckless to ruin it for everyone. The Aroostook Riders ATV Club also urged riders to slow down and use extreme caution, stressing that it is not a trail the community can afford to lose.
