Gov. Greg Abbott says end to Iran war would bring down fuel costs

Gov. Greg Abbott made a campaign stop in Palestine on Tuesday to tout his affordability agenda.

PALESTINE, Texas (KLTV) — Gov. Greg Abbott (R-Texas) made a campaign stop in Palestine on Tuesday to tout his affordability agenda.

The Governor’s visit comes at a time when Texans are dealing with higher fuel costs.

Abbott said an end to the war in Iran would bring down costs for drivers.

“We all know what the solution is and that is the end of the war in Iran,” Abbott said. “When that war ends, fuel’s going to go back down to lower than it was before.”

The event took place at Old Magnolia Sandwich Shop, where Abbott spoke with farmers and small business owners. He was joined by state Sen. Bryan Hughes (R-Tyler) and state Rep. Cody Harris (R-Palestine).

Abbott’s visit to East Texas comes six weeks until the November election, where he faces state Rep. Gina Hinojosa (D-Austin).

Abbott outlined his property tax plan, which includes a two-thirds voter approval for property tax increases and lowering the homestead appraisal cap from 10% to 3%.

Richard Farris, owner of Old Magnolia Sandwich Shop, said he is encouraged by the Governor’s property tax plan.

“I had a 17% increase in my tax value on this piece of property and multiple ones downtown this year,” Farris said. “It’s horrible.”

“He says he wants to go to a 3% increase,” Farris continued. “That’s better than what we’ve got.”

Abbott also brought up a directive he issued on Monday to halt data center permits.

“These data centers must go into these communities and lower the cost of living,” Abbott said. “By reducing the cost of electricity, by reducing things like property taxes.”

Election day is Nov. 3.
