Girl, 16, dies in fiery crash off Pali Highway in Kailua A 16-year-old girl died in a motor vehicle crash on the Kailua-bound side of Pali Highway early this morning, according to Honolulu Emergency Medical Services and the Honolulu Fire Department. The Honolulu Fire Department received a 911 call at 6:04 a.m. reporting an automobile on fire off the Pali Highway in Kailua, beyond the tunnels in the Kailua-bound lanes. Five units staffed by 19 personnel responded. The first HFD unit arrived at 6:15 a.m. and found a single vehicle off the highway on an embankment. Firefighters determined the incident involved a vehicle fire and a possible trapped occupant, upgraded the response and requested additional resources. Firefighters began a fire attack and extinguished the blaze at 6:26 a.m. After stabilizing the vehicle, crews found no occupants inside. While searching the surrounding area, firefighters discovered an unresponsive female in the brush below the embankment. A medical assessment determined she showed no signs of life. Firefighters secured the victim and used a rope rescue system to recover her from the brush. EMS responded to the crash at about 6 a.m. and pronounced the 16-year-old girl dead at the scene.
