GRAND RAPIDS—An Itasca County woman convicted of criminal vehicular homicide in connection with a 2024 fatal hit-and-run crash has been sentenced to a stayed prison term, one year in jail and five years of supervised probation.
According to an Aug. 5 warrant of commitment filed in Itasca County District Court, Cynthia Arlene Martin was sentenced Aug. 3 after pleading guilty to one felony count of criminal vehicular homicide involving a driver who leaves the scene of a collision.
Judge Heidi Chandler sentenced Martin to 48 months in the custody of the Minnesota Commissioner of Corrections. The prison sentence was stayed for five years, meaning Martin will remain on supervised probation rather than serve the prison term unless she violates the conditions of her probation.
As a condition of probation, Martin was ordered to serve 364 days in the Itasca County Jail.
The court also ordered Martin to report to the Itasca County Jail by 7 p.m. each July 3 during her five-year probationary period and remain in custody until her release on July 5.
Court records indicate the sentence represents a downward dispositional departure from the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines. The order lists Martin’s acceptance of responsibility as the reason for the departure.
Martin was convicted of causing a collision on July 3, 2024, and leaving the scene, resulting in the death of 19-year-old Carter Haithcock.
She will remain under supervised probation through the Minnesota Department of Corrections for five years.
