Memphis man sentenced to 19 years for felon in possession conviction
JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) - A Memphis man was sentenced to 19 years in federal prison following a three-day trial on a felon in possession of a firearm charge.
Chief United States District Judge Kristine G. Baker sentenced Percy Jackson, of Memphis, to 235 months on count one, felon in possession of a firearm. In addition to the prison term, Baker sentenced Jackson to three years of supervised release.
A federal grand jury indicted Jackson on June 6, 2024, on three counts: being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime. The federal jury returned a guilty verdict on the count of felon in possession of a firearm.
Traffic stop leads to arrest
On Oct. 10, 2023, West Memphis police officers stopped Jackson for a defective brake light and expired tags.
“Jackson was the only occupant of the vehicle and appeared nervous and sweating when questioned by law enforcement officers,” the release stated.
During a vehicle search, police found a loaded handgun that was reportedly stolen. Police also found a bag of pills containing fentanyl in the glove compartment.
“At the time of this incident, Jackson was on supervised release with the Western District of Tennessee for his felon in possession of a firearm conviction,” the release said.
Prior criminal history
Jackson previously served a 15-year federal sentence for illegally possessing firearms before being released on Sept. 28, 2022.
His criminal history includes five convictions for aggravated robbery, one conviction for attempted aggravated robbery, one conviction for facilitation of especially aggravated robbery, and prior convictions for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Because of his violent criminal history, Jackson is classified as an armed career criminal.
