Debra Winger, 71, was arrested outside the UN protesting the Israel-Gaza war alongside Susan Sarandon as part of Jewish Voice for Peace.
Debra Winger burst onto the Hollywood scene in the 1980s, starring in a string of hit, critically acclaimed films, including An Officer and a Gentleman and Terms of Endearment , both of which earned her Oscar nominations. Other film credits during that era included Legal Eagles opposite Robert Redford and Urban Cowboy with John Travolta .
Although she has stayed out of the Hollywood spotlight for the most part for decades, her name made some headlines this past week when she was among hundreds of New Yorkers who protested outside the United Nations when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netenayahu was in town to speak to the General Assembly.
As part of the organization Jewish Voice for Peace, Winger joined fellow Hollywood activists Susan Sarandon , Glennon Doyle , and a host of other big names to protest the war between Israel and Gaza that has dominated the news since 2023, per The Guardian . Winger, who was among more than 100 people arrested outside the event, wore a shirt that read, “Fund People Not Bombs,” as seen in an Instagram post from Broadway actor Paul Soileau , another protester.
Winger, 71, also shared the same photo from the event on her Instagram stories, according to Parade . The photo depicts her being arrested, with the words, “My honor to be arrested along the legend @lsarsour,” referring to fellow activist Linda Sarsour .
Winger, whose last big-screen credit was in 2017’s The Lovers , per IMDb , is no stranger to activism and has used her voice for various social issues on her social media. She urged fellow New Yorkers to vote in the 2025 mayoral election. In December, she auctioned off a skirt and a script from Terms of Endearment to “help fund @PublicCounsel’s vital work protecting civil rights and social justice.”
