Onawa neighbors decorate for RAGBRAI’s ‘Rock and Roll Out’ theme

ONAWA, Iowa (KTIV) - Residents and businesses in Onawa are decorating their lawns and storefronts to match the town’s RAGBRAI theme, “Rock and Roll Out,” ahead of the annual bike ride’s stop in the community.

The city hosted a yard decorating contest, encouraging every home and business to participate. Decorations included rock and roll-themed displays, bikes, window paint, and murals.

Mitch and Beth Jamison took home the “Best Yard” title. Reflections Salon was named the business winner.

Judges also recognized several other participants who took part in the contest.

Elizabeth Garcia and Darla Mohr of Reflections said the decorating effort was a community-wide celebration.

“Just love having new people come to town, and any new people come into town is great for Onawa and it’s just exciting,” Mohr said.

Garcia said the salon used a bike provided by the city as a starting point for their display.

“We got the bike from the city, I believe, and then we just kind of built things from there. We knew we wanted it to be fun and colorful and really just, we wanted to go with the rock ‘n’ roll theme,” Garcia said.

While Reflections Salon will not be open during RAGBRAI, residents like Mohr plan to host riders at their homes to offer hospitality to those passing through town.
