Robert Eugene Hillis, 81, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2026, in Phoenix, Arizona. He was born on August 28, 1944.
Bob was a native of Emporia, Kansas, and spent his early years in the community. In 1950, he was among the first students to attend the newly built William Allen White Elementary School in Emporia. He graduated from Emporia High School in 1962. As a young man starting out, he was well-known as an employee of the Red X Pharmacy.
On June 7, 1963, Robert married Linda McMillan. They had two children, Christine Darling of Gilbert, Arizona, and Bradley Hillis of Goochland, Virginia. Although their marriage later ended in divorce, Robert remained a devoted father and grandfather. He was blessed with two grandchildren, Alexandria Darling and Gary Marshall.
In the 1970's in Emporia, Robert owned and operated Art’s Barber Shop, where he became a familiar and friendly presence in the community. He later worked in real estate with Ames Real Estate.
In 1977, Bob moved with his family to California. During his years in California, he worked in a variety of occupations, including auto parts, retail, and real estate.
On August 16, 1987, Robert married Deborah Jane. They lived and worked in Glendale, California, for several years before eventually moving in 1996 to Richmond, Virginia, where they cared for Deborah’s mother.
Robert and Deborah shared many years together until her death on September 4, 2024, in Goochland, Virginia.
Robert is survived by his children, Christine Darling and Bradley Hillis; his grandchildren, Alexandria Darling and Gary Marshall; and his brother, Donald Hillis, and Donald’s wife, Sally, of California. He will also be remembered by extended family and many friends whose lives he touched throughout the years.
Bob will be remembered for his years in Emporia, his work as a barber and in real estate, his dedication to his family, and the many friendships and relationships he formed throughout his life. His memory will live on in the hearts of his children, grandchildren, brother, family, and friends.
