Free Community Celebration Planned in Manchester, Maine for America 250
Manchester is planning a full day of community activities to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.
The Manchester Historical Society will host the celebration on Saturday, August 15, with events taking place at several locations around town. Most activities will be free unless otherwise noted.
The day begins with a pancake breakfast at the Manchester Fire Station from 8:30 to 10 a.m. The breakfast will have a charge.
An opening ceremony will follow at the Manchester Town Office from 10 to 11 a.m. Cub Scouts will lead the Pledge of Allegiance, while Carolyn Van Horn will perform the national anthem. Organizers also plan to present a cane to Manchester’s oldest resident.
Additional activities will be held at the Manchester Grange and the Drum parking lot. Plans include a bounce house, touch-a-truck display, petting zoo featuring local farmers, an antique car show, raffles and music from DJ John Marble.
Nicole’s School of Dance will provide performances, and children will be able to participate in crafts, rock painting, face painting and temporary tattoos. The Manchester playground will also be available.
Former Manchester Elementary School students are invited to attend a class reunion, look through old photographs and bring additional pictures for organizers to copy.
Food and drinks will be sold by the Lions Club, while the Manchester Community Church will offer blueberry cake and pies. A local Scout troop will also sell baked goods.
The event will include a handmade quilt display by Sherry Flagg, stained-glass samples from Stained Glass Express and informational tables operated by the Conservation Committee and Snowmobile Riders Club.
Crafters may set up tables and sell their work at no charge, but they must contact organizers in advance. Residents are also encouraged to bring secret family recipes for a community cookbook currently being assembled.
Organizers say more activities may still be added before the celebration.
