Son says mother who was murdered devoted life to helping others
SOMERSET, Ky. (WKYT) - Sherri Mitko, 70, was found dead in her home in rural Pulaski County last week. Four people, including three teenagers, are facing charges in her death.
Mitko was originally from Ohio but moved to rural Kentucky, where people embraced her kindness and generosity, according to those who knew her.
“She was the type of person who found joy in helping other people,” said Chris Mitko, Sherri Mitko’s son.
A teacher who opened her home
Chris Mitko said his mother was more than a teacher and cared deeply for her students, even welcoming some into her home when they needed extra help.
“Her home was always open. I have a really close friend group, that we traveled a lot. They would come along with us,” Chris Mitko said.
Chris Mitko said he learned last Wednesday that his mother had died, then that she had been murdered.
Four face charges
Two 17-year-olds, a 15-year-old and 20-year-old McCoy Chaney are facing charges. The criminal complaint states that several of the boys wanted to rob her. Police have said one had a connection to Mitko.
“I have a good idea but in fairness to the process, I am going to let that play out when the names are revealed,” Chris Mitko said.
Remembered for small acts of kindness
People say they have friendships that become more like family, and people say that describes Sherri Mitko. One friend said there wasn’t one big thing she did — there were a hundred little things that meant so much.
Friends say Mitko gave her time, talents and kindness without expecting anything in return.
“It is unfortunate now. That when you live a really modest life, a lot of times for the most part in service to others, you don’t get that kind of recognition a lot,” Chris Mitko said.
People say Sherri Mitko left a mark on many lives.
Because the three teens are juveniles, officials have not released much information about them. McCoy Chaney, the only adult charged, will be arraigned in Pulaski District Court on Monday morning.
