Nebraska City man dies after escaping custody, barricading in residence
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - A Nebraska City man has died after a standoff with police Friday, according to police.
The Nebraska City Police Department reported Jackson Kelly, 23, was arrested at 3:50 p.m. for 1st-degree sexual assault.
The NCPD alleges the following:
As officers arrived at the jail, Kelly escaped and ran before barricading himself inside a Nebraska City residence.
The Nebraska State Patrol SWAT team was requested and made entry after attempts to get Kelly to exit the residence.
Kelly was found inside the basement with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Per Nebraska state statute, a grand jury investigation will be carried out.
No officers fired their weapons or were injured.
Kelly was out on $10,000 bond for an assault charge in March.
According to the affidavit filed Friday, police were contacted with a report that Kelly sexually abused a child over the course of 2 years.
