Miles Lee is currently in jail on a $1 million cash bond.
Police said Lee fired a gun during an argument at a party in West Des Moines on July 4.
Seventeen-year-old Teonnie Tillman of Ankeny, who was an uninvolved bystander, was shot and killed.
Lee's attorney is requesting pretrial release screening, claiming Lee has never been in trouble before and has family he can stay with.
A bond review hearing is scheduled for August 26.
Eighteen-year-old Byrone Sanchez-Zermeno faces weapons charges in connection with the incident.
