Nunn announces federal funding for ICON Water Trails project

Federal money will help pay for the next phase of the ICON Water Trails project.

U.S. Rep. Zach Nunn announced Monday morning an additional $2 million is coming to the project. Project leaders say the money will be used to expand public access at Birdland Park and Prospect Park next year.

The money will come from the Community Project Funding (CPF) process, according to Nunn's office.

"Des Moines grew up around two rivers, and we haven’t done enough to make them part of how families experience our city,” Nunn said in a provided statement. "This $2 million builds the access at Birdland and Prospect Park that changes that — safer, easier ways down to the Des Moines River for the families, kayakers, and anglers who use it. A riverfront people actually use fills the restaurants, hotels, and shops around it, turning more visitors into more customers and more economic growth across Central Iowa."

The money will also expand accessibility for visitors to enjoy the Des Moines River.
