Maine Democrats vote for delegates to replace Platner’s Senate nomination

ELLSWORTH, Maine (WABI) - Maine Democrats gathered Saturday to elect county delegates who will choose a replacement for Graham Platner’s Senate nomination.

Meetings took place across all 16 counties, both virtually and in person. Attendees voted for 23 delegates and five alternates to represent their counties at a convention in Bangor on July 25.

The Hancock County meeting was held at Ellsworth Elementary and Middle School. Attendees said participation was important at what they described as a pivotal moment for democracy.

“I felt like this was a critical point in grassroots democracy that kind of got generated, a lot of the energy got generated from Graham’s campaign. And I was a Graham Platner supporter, so I wanted to see that energy kind of carry forth. And so it was important for me to be here,” said Catherine Ednie, a Hancock resident.

“Well, I’m concerned about our democracy. I feel like if the Democrats don’t step up and get more power back, the Republicans are going to destroy our democracy,” said Vicky Smith, a Bar Harbor resident.

The elected delegates will convene at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor on July 25 to vote for Platner’s replacement. The event will be live streamed for the public.
