University of Alaska-Anchorage has appointed Dr. Sam Hirt as the new director of Kodiak College.
Hirt, who was born and raised in Fairbanks and graduated from Barrow High School, will return to Alaska after more than a decade working in higher education.
He’ll start at Kodiak College in January. He currently serves as interim provost at Southern Virginia University, where he oversees the academic budget and works with departments on student success, career education, enrollment and admissions.
As Kodiak College director, Hirt will oversee campus operations and represent the college with local, regional, statewide and national partners.
In a Wednesday press release, UAA said his work will focus on building Kodiak College’s community relationships and academic programs while pursuing continued growth and innovation.
“I’m honored to return home to Alaska and to join the Kodiak College community,” Hirt said. “Kodiak College plays a vital role in expanding educational opportunities across the region.”
Hirt said he looks forward to working with KC’s faculty, staff and community partners to support students and strengthen the college’s connections throughout Kodiak Island and beyond.
Hirt earned a bachelor’s degree in integrative biology from Brigham Young University and a master’s degree in zoology from Auburn University.
He earned his doctorate from the University of Alaska, where his research developed a method for estimating bowhead whale calving rates through analysis of baleen. The work was conducted in collaboration with North Slope scientists and Inupiat whalers.
He also has experience teaching at community colleges and liberal arts universities.
UAA Chancellor Cheryl Siemers said Hirt brings that experience and thorough knowledge of Alaska’s educational environment that will benefit Kodiak College.
“His leadership and vision will help Kodiak College continue to thrive as a hub for learning and community partnership,” Siemers said.
Dr. Jackie Cason will continue as interim director through the fall semester. UAA credited Cason for her service to Kodiak College students, faculty and staff during the transition.
