WAIPIO VALLEY, Hawaii (Island News) -- Big Island police opened an investigation into the remains of a woman that were found along the shoreline of Waipio Valley over the weekend.
According to the Hawaii Police Department, Hamakua patrol officers arrived at the Waipio Valley beach area at 12:35 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 30, after receiving a report that a body was seen at the shoreline. Officers located the body of what appeared to a woman, near the water’s edge in an advanced state of decomposition.
Due to how decomposed the body is, the approximate age and race of the woman could not be determined.
Police do not suspect foul play in this death after signs of suspicious injuries were not shown from an autopsy performed at the Hilo Benioff Medical Center on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Toxicology results are pending which will determine the exact cause and manner of death.
Police are using fingerprint database searches and DNA analysis to try to positively identify the woman.
