Driver arrested after fleeing traffic stop, crashing into historic Haymarket building, police say

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - The Nebraska State Patrol said the driver who crashed their vehicle into a building in the Haymarket District Friday morning has been arrested on multiple charges.

Lincoln police officers responded to an automatic crash notification at the intersection of Seventh and P streets shortly after 2 a.m. The Ford Fusion had crashed into the entrance of the historic Lincoln Station building. The vehicle’s airbags had deployed in the crash.

Lincoln Fire and Rescue and the Nebraska State Patrol also responded to the scene.

Emergency crews provided medical attention to the driver, 22-year-old Levi Epp from Sterling, and his passenger, a 22-year-old Lincoln woman. The crash report shows they were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Before arriving on the scene, officers had been made aware that state troopers had attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the Ford, and that Epp fled and crashed into the building, according to the crash report.

Troopers reported Epp had been traveling in the wrong direction on Q Street in downtown Lincoln, the report shows. He then allegedly turned the wrong way onto 10th Street and ultimately turned onto P Street, where he continued straight into the building.

Epp has since been released from the hospital and booked into the Lancaster County Jail. He’s accused of DUI, willful reckless driving, flight to avoid arrest, refusal to submit to a DUI pretest, carrying a concealed handgun while under the influence, possession of a firearm while committing a felony and driving the wrong way on a one-way street.

Officers spoke with the building’s maintenance employee and were informed of the damage. Lincoln Fire and Rescue did not believe the building suffered any structural damage.
