Woman arrested after dog rescued from 114-degree car in Conway, New Hampshire
A woman from Vermont is charged with animal cruelty after police say she left a dog in her car in a parking lot in Conway, New Hampshire, as temperatures outside soared.
The Conway Police Department says someone called them after spotting a dog in a parked car with no windows open in the Walmart parking lot at about 3:48 p.m. on Tuesday.
The animal control officer arrived and was able to measure the temperature inside the car, which was not running, at 114 degrees. The temperature outside was 88 degrees.
Believing the dog was in immediate danger, another officer then made entry into the car and took the dog out.
Police say the dog was showing signs of heat stroke and was taken to Conway Veterinary Hospital, where the dog's internal body temperature was measured at 107.5 degrees. That temperature a critical and potentially life-threatening condition that can result in organ failure.
Due to the severity of the dog's condition, it was then transferred to the Maine Veterinary Medical Center in Scarborough, Maine, for advanced emergency care.
Approximately 45 minutes after the initial call, police say they were able to locate and identify the owner of the dog.
Nicole Oleson, 38, of Burlington, Vermont, was arrested and charged with animal cruelty.
Police say the dog is expected to make a full recovery.
