GM Expands Into Grid Storage and Vehicle-to-Grid Energy Networks | OilPrice.com.Iran announced the end of… Global oil inventories are being… General Motors is expanding beyond electric vehicles and into broader energy infrastructure, unveiling plans to deploy vehicle-to-grid technology, sodium-ion battery storage, and second-life battery systems as part of a strategy to support increasingly strained power grids.At its GM Empower 2026 event, Chief Product Officer Sterling Anderson outlined the company's vision of using EVs as distributed energy resources while simultaneously developing large-scale stationary storage solutions for utilities and commercial customers.The automaker said more than 250,000 bidirectional-capable GM electric vehicles are already on U.S.When paired with GM Energy home systems, these vehicles can supply electricity to homes during outages and, eventually, participate in vehicle-to-grid (V2G) programs that allow power to flow back to local electricity networks.GM plans to make bidirectional charging capabilities standard across its EV lineup, from mass-market models such as the Chevrolet Equinox EV to premium offerings like the Cadillac Escalade IQ.The company argues that widespread V2G adoption could lower energy costs for consumers, create new revenue opportunities, and improve grid stability.To advance the technology, GM is working with utilities including Pacific Gas & Electric and DTE Energy.In Northern California, the company projects that a fleet of 130,000 GM EVs could be operating by 2030, with more than 52,000 vehicles participating in grid-balancing programs.A key part of the strategy is software integration.GM said it is developing a unified platform within its mobile applications to manage vehicle charging, home energy systems, and future grid interactions through a single interface.Beyond EV integration, GM is also targeting utility-scale energy storage.The company announced a partnership with Peak Energy to develop sodium-ion battery systems designed specifically for stationary applications.Unlike lithium-ion batteries used in vehicles, sodium-ion technology prioritizes long cycle life, durability, and lower costs, making it attractive for grid-scale storage projects.The move comes as utilities and technology companies seek additional energy storage capacity to support growing electricity demand from artificial intelligence data centers and expanding renewable energy generation.GM is also expanding its collaboration with battery recycler Redwood Materials.The companies are deploying repurposed GM battery packs for stationary storage projects, including a planned installation at a GM manufacturing facility in Michigan.The project will provide 1.5 megawatts of power capacity and 7.2 megawatt-hours of energy storage, with GM estimating more than $3 million in electricity savings over the system's lifetime.The initiative builds on previous work between the companies, including the use of second-life EV batteries in what GM described as North America's largest microgrid at Redwood Materials' facility in Sparks, Nevada.The announcements highlight GM's growing efforts to diversify its battery business beyond transportation as automakers seek new revenue streams from energy storage, grid services, and electricity management.As power demand accelerates across North America, particularly from AI infrastructure and electrification trends, automakers with large battery manufacturing operations are increasingly positioning themselves as participants in the broader energy ecosystem rather than solely vehicle manufacturers.By Charles Kennedy for Oilprice.com More Top Reads From Oilprice.com
