Police search for gunman after man killed on Kansas City front steps

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A late-night shooting on the city’s east side left a man dead on a front porch Monday night, triggering a homicide investigation with no suspects currently in custody.

Officers responded to the 5600 block of East 28th Street just before 10:30 p.m. August 10 on reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, police found a man, 53-year-old Derrick D. McDonald, on the front steps of a home suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds.

Police officers and Kansas City Fire Department medics immediately performed life-saving measures before rushing McDonald to a nearby hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead by hospital staff a short time later.

Detectives and crime scene technicians remained at the scene overnight recovering physical evidence, canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses, and reviewing nearby surveillance footage. Investigators have not yet determined what led to the shooting.
