It said Gerber died Sunday while at a rehab facility, a death confirmed by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office. The cause of death has not been confirmed. Newsweek said Gerber had spoken openly in recent years about his struggles with mental health and drug abuse, and that he posted on Instagram in March about undergoing ibogaine treatment. It said ibogaine is a naturally occurring psychoactive compound found in a West African shrub that can cause cardiovascular and neurological effects, and that a 2022 review identified 58 ibogaine-associated emergencies, including 38 deaths.
Newsweek is reporting that a 28-year-old Venezuelan DoorDash worker was shot and wounded by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Sunday in Austin, Texas. It said the man was identified by immigration attorney Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch as Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, who was making a food delivery when the shooting occurred near Anderson Square and Research Boulevard. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said city police officers were not involved, and Austin-Travis County EMS Chief Robert Luckritz said the man was believed to have been shot once in the torso and was listed in serious but stable condition. Newsweek is reporting that election forecaster Allan Lichtman has outlined a new 10-point framework for assessing presidential greatness ahead of his book "Great American Presidents: The Twelve Who Transformed the Nation," out September 22. It said Lichtman told Newsweek the model centers on consequence rather than popularity, measuring how presidents seized the defining challenges of their eras. The keys include crisis leadership, transformational change, moral vision, stewardship of executive power, coalition building, institution building, diplomatic influence and adaptability.
Newsweek is reporting that President Donald Trump is underwater in 41 states and every major battleground state 20 months into his second term, according to new polling. It said a Newsweek analysis puts Trump at 33 percent approval and 61 percent disapproval nationally, a net of minus 28. It said his strongest support is in Wyoming at plus 19, followed by North Dakota at plus 11, and that among voters aged 18 to 34, 20 percent approve while 72 percent disapprove. Newsweek said the White House has dismissed recent polling, with spokesman Davis Ingle citing Trump's 2024 election victory as the clearest measure of public support.
