Trooper carries fawn up embankment along Indiana Toll Road in LaPorte County

Deer initially reported as injured, but trooper found it could not climb steep embankment

LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) - An Indiana State Police trooper helped a fawn to safety after a call along the Indiana Toll Road in LaPorte County.

Police said the deer was initially reported as injured. When Trooper McCormick arrived at the scene, he found the animal was not injured — it was a fawn that could not climb a steep embankment.

McCormick carried the fawn up the embankment so its mother could return for it and to keep it from wandering onto the interstate, officials said.

State police said it is usually best to leave wildlife alone, but the decision to help the fawn was made to prevent a potential crash.
