GREAT BEND, Kan. (KAKE) — A 17-year-old girl is dead, and a 19-year-old man has been arrested after a shooting in Great Bend early Saturday morning.
According to the Great Bend Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of Lakin Avenue at 12:30 a.m. after a 911 hang-up call. There, police were told a person had been shot in the backyard of the home, and officers located the girl “who was deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.”
“During the investigation, officers learned that the suspect, identified as Keegan Martens, white male, 19, had fled the scene prior to officers' arrival. Martens was later located in Salina, Kansas, where he was taken into custody. He was subsequently transported to the Barton County Jail, where he remains in custody,” police said.
The investigation is ongoing.
Family identified the victim as 17-year-old Erin Smith in a GoFundMe.
“She was only 17 and a very beautiful, kind soul. She had her whole life ahead of her, and now she is gone. This isn't fair,” her sister wrote in the GoFundMe.
