City of Joliet Invites Residents to Free Tree Walk at Route 66 Park
The City of Joliet’s Tree Advisory Board invites residents to learn more about the benefits of a healthy urban forest during a free Tree Walk on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at Route 66 Park (920 N. Broadway Street).
The guided walk will provide homeowners and nature enthusiasts with practical information on selecting, planting, watering, and caring for trees. Participants will also learn how to identify a variety of tree species found throughout the park and discover which trees are best suited for residential properties. Educational materials will be available for attendees.
“Trees are one of our community’s greatest natural assets, and we hope this Tree Walk helps residents better understand how to care for them and appreciate the important role they play in our neighborhoods,” said Rita Renwick, Chair of the City of Joliet Tree Advisory Board. “Whether you’re planting your first tree or simply want to learn more about the beautiful trees that surround us, this is a great opportunity to connect with nature and fellow community members.”
The event comes as the City conducts a comprehensive inventory of trees located in public spaces throughout Joliet, including century-old oak trees that are an important part of the community’s natural heritage. The inventory is being completed through a grant administered by the Chicago Region Trees Initiative in partnership with The Morton Arboretum and will help guide future tree preservation, maintenance, and planting efforts across the city.
Residents of all ages are encouraged to attend and gain a greater appreciation for the important role trees play in improving air quality, reducing stormwater runoff, providing shade, and enhancing neighborhood beauty.
