Extreme heat impacts Alabama farmers market attendance and operations

Extreme heat is affecting attendance and operations at Alabama's Farmers Market on Finley Avenue, where vendors and customers are finding ways to stay cool.

Some businesses are using shade and fans to keep both people and produce cooler. One customer said that having shade over fruits and vegetables helps them stay fresh instead of sitting in the hot sun. For many shoppers, staying cool is a priority, with some stopping by stands specifically for cold drinks and ice cream before heading out.

"A lot of people just come in for the drinks or for the ice cream and just to keep cool," said Brandi Bazquez, a worker at The Peach Barn. "Well, our boss wanted to make sure that we were, like, not like, suffering from the heat. So he got the air conditioner just for us and he offered us water and drinks. Just keep us cool, and it moves around for the customers to know that they're like getting pulled off from here. They can have somewhere to get like enough shade for all of us."

Staying hydrated and finding shade remain important for those enjoying the farmers market during the extreme heat.
