Gas prices drop below $4 nationally, but many Vt. drivers still pay more ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. (WCAX) - The national average price per gallon of gas is now under $4, but most drivers in Vermont are still paying around 20 cents more. Many drivers are making sure to find the lowest prices possible. Stations around Vermont are trying to help, like Bushey’s Auto in Essex Junction, which is offering prices of $3.89 per gallon. They intentionally keep their prices around 10 cents below neighboring stations. That strategy makes their pumps a favorite among locals. “People that are just here to get gas, they purposely come in just to tell us they appreciate the low gas prices and that they are happy about it,” said Chantel Chaffee, a Bushey’s employee. “Everybody’s wallet is a little tight and to have a local business that has brought their gas prices down more than once for the local consumer has just been such a gift,” said Maggie Titus of Essex Junction. While prices have dropped slightly in Vermont and across the country, prices are still roughly a dollar more than this time last year. Beckie Black of Essex Junction, who travels long distances for work, said she’s frustrated that Vermont’s high prices are lagging. “Vermont is already an expensive place to live and to add fuel to the fire, are gas prices just aren’t coming down in the same way we are seeing in other places,” Black said. The Cambridge Village Market, another place offering prices below the Vermont average, said they are trying to set the standard. “We’re hoping that now that we are in the threes, that other people around us will drop into the threes, as well, so we can drop even lower. We’re not trying to get rich; we just want to make it affordable for people,” said Erica Hayes, who owns the Cambridge Village Market. Copyright 2026 WCAX. All rights reserved.
