Gulfport Fire Department, Mississippi Forestry contain woods fire near Gulfport neighborhood; Chief warns of poor air quality in Turkey Creek area

GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) — Fire crews have contained a fast-moving woods fire that began Saturday afternoon near the Holly Circle neighborhood.

The Gulfport Fire Department was assisted by the Mississippi Forestry Commission. Gulfport fire officials said the forestry commission cut lanes around the perimeter of the fire to contain it. Officials said the fire burned close to 100 acres but did not spread to any structures.

The Gulfport Fire Department said the fire is near the corner of Holly Circle and Ohio Avenue. Officials warned of poor air quality in the Turkey Creek area as a result of the heavy smoke from the fire.

“You know, if you live in this area and need any assistance, let us know, you know, the air quality is not great right now, so you may want to just stay indoors,” Gulfport Fire Chief Billy Kelley said.

There was heavy foot traffic throughout the Holly Circle neighborhood Saturday evening, with community members trying to get a good look at the fire. First responders reminded the public that they understand the draw, but they need the space to control the fire.

“There’ll be plenty of time to look later, just please stay out of the way and let all of these fire departments and the Mississippi Forestry Commission do their job. Just please stay out of the area, don’t come in here unless you absolutely have to,” Craft said.
