The Upper Arkansas Watershed Partnership (UAWP) will host open house events in Salida and Buena Vista to talk about the projects they’ve been working on in the Upper Arkansas River watershed.
The open house in Salida will be 5:30-7:30 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Valley View School House, 9051 CR 140. The open house in Buena Vista will be 5:30-7:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at the BV Community Center Aspen Room, 715 E Main St.
A press release stated that the UAWP was established in 2020 to “foster collaboration among regional agencies, organizations, governments, and landowners in the Upper Arkansas River Basin to promote management actions to achieve a healthy and resilient watershed.”
The founding members of the UAWP are the Upper Arkansas Conservation District, Central Colorado Conservancy, Greater Arkansas River Nature Association, Arkansas River Watershed Collaborative and the Collegiate Peaks Chapter of Trout Unlimited. In addition to this core partnership, each project also includes a wide variety of local, regional and state stakeholders.
Some of the projects to be discussed include the South Arkansas River Restoration Project, a 1.2 Mile Reach in Salida which includes the former Vandaveer Ranch property, the Chaffee County agriculture resilience coordinator work, Del Monte Ditch irrigation infrastructure improvements funded in-part by the Chaffee County Common Ground Fund, stream health assessments, water quality monitoring on local tributaries of the Arkansas River, beaver working groups and more, the release stated.
Each open house will include a short presentation at 6 p.m. by UAWP member organizations. Snacks and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided.
