Maine Trooper Disciplined Over Use of Force During 2025 Arrest
A Maine State Police trooper has been suspended for 15 weeks after an internal investigation determined he used excessive force during an arrest last year, according to the Bangor Daily News.
Trooper Jacob Murphy-Canto was disciplined after investigators concluded he violated the agency’s use-of-force policy during a September 2025 arrest.
According to WGME 13,, Murphy-Canto was placing a handcuffed woman in the back of a police cruiser when she kicked him. He then punched her twice in the face.
Prosecutors reviewed the incident but declined to pursue criminal charges against Murphy-Canto. However, Maine State Police determined the punches were not necessary or justified under the circumstances.
The news station reported that the suspension followed an internal review of the arrest and the trooper’s actions. Maine State Police policies require officers to use only the amount of force reasonably necessary to control a situation and protect themselves or others.
Murphy-Canto’s 15-week suspension is one of the more significant disciplinary actions available short of termination.
