Georgia Governor Carl Sanders and Florida Governor Farris Bryant met at the Georgia-Florida border in July 1963 to officially open the section of Interstate 75 from Unadilla, Georgia, to Jasper, Florida. The two governors arrived separately at the Valdosta Airport and then rode together to the event, where they met a crowd of about 1,000, including several dignitaries. Sanders and Bryant discussed the economic importance of the highway system to both states, then enjoyed barbecue and watermelon “under the shade of pine trees” with the ensemble.
