Hamilton Township, N.J. — A Mays Landing woman is dead, and another person was seriously injured after an ATV struck a fallen tree on Columbia Road early Saturday morning, ejecting all four occupants. Authorities said none of the four people involved was wearing a helmet. The Hamilton Township Police Department said 37-year-old Alaina Huepfel of Mays Landing and 56-year-old Shelly Cassel of Mays Landing were seriously injured in the 2:53 AM crash. Both were transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City. Huepfel died Sunday from her injuries. According to the department, 62-year-old Leon Cassel of Mays Landing was operating a Honda FourTrax 4x4 northbound on Columbia Road with three passengers, Huepfel, Shelly Cassel, and 36-year-old Brian Beals of Egg Harbor City. The ATV struck a tree that had fallen across the roadway just north of Oak Street. The impact ejected all four occupants. Shelly Cassel sustained serious injuries and was transported to ARMC-City. No other injuries were reported. Mays Landing Man Pleads Guilty After 950 Heroin Folds Found Leon Cassel was arrested for operating under the influence of alcohol and related motor vehicle offenses. Additional charges are pending as the investigation continues. The Hamilton Township Rescue Squad, AtlantiCare Paramedics, and the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office assisted on scene. The public is reminded that charges are accusations and all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Woman Arrested For Crash That Killed Two Maine DOT Workers According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety, an arrest has been made in connection with the January 2026 crash that took the lives of two Maine DOT workers and injured a third worker. The press release explains that the Maine State Police arrested 34-year-old Samantha Tupper, of Augusta, at around 6:30 Friday morning, September 25, following her indictment by a Kennebec County Grand Jury. Tupper was indicted Thursday on two counts of Manslaughter, two counts of Aggravated Driving to Endanger, two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child and one count of Aggravated Assault. Police arrested Tupper without incident at a residence on Mayflower Road in Augusta. She was taken to the Kennebec County Jail, where bail was set at $50,000. The charges stem from a January 13 crash on I-95 southbound near mile marker 127 in Waterville. According to investigators, Tupper was driving a minivan when she failed to stop at a posted stop sign at the end of the Kennedy Memorial Drive on-ramp. Her vehicle then attempted to enter the passing lane, where it was struck by a tractor-trailer. READ MORE: How Will The Weekend Nor'Easter Affect Maine? The impact pushed Tupper's vehicle into an active MaineDOT work zone, where it struck three workers. Two of those workers, 60-year-old James Brown and 51-year-old Dwayne Campbell, both of Waterville, were killed. A third MaineDOT worker was injured. ***NOTE - All suspects are considered innocent until being found guilty in a court of law Tupper remains at the Kennebec County Jail pending her initial court appearance. The investigation and court proceedings remain ongoing.
