The fire department said firefighters forced entry into the home and advanced a hose line into the exterior basement entrance area. Crews encountered heavy smoke and found a fire involving materials stored in the basement. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and ventilated the home to remove smoke. The fire was contained to the area where it started, with no significant extension to other parts of the home, according to the department. No civilians were injured. One firefighter was taken from the scene for evaluation of non-life-threatening injuries. The Dubuque Fire Department estimated preliminary property and contents loss at $8,000. The fire remains under investigation, but officials said it has not been determined to be suspicious.
